White Plains drivers seek fare increase

WHITE PLAINS - Taxi drivers faced with increased fuel, insurance and maintenance costs are lobbying the city for a fare increase, more taxi stands and better enforcement of rules governing out-of-town "gypsy" cabs.

More than 100 of the 400 licensed cabbies in White Plains have joined District Council 9 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades over the past two weeks, hoping that the union will bring more clout to their effort to improve working conditions. About 80 drivers and union officials turned up at a Common Council meeting last week to raise their issues and ask for a private meeting with Mayor Joseph Delfino to discuss them. Read More...
