IUPAT Wraps Up a Strong Presence at National Legislative Conference On the week of April 14, 2008, the AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department held its annual legislative conference with much fanfare and success. In addition to hosting numerous influential lawmakers, including the contenders for the Democratic nominee for president, the BCTD was celebrating its 100th Anniversary as well. From Iowa to New Hampshire to Nevada and beyond, the IUPAT Army of Black and Gold Volunteers from the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades were quick to move after our union’s endorsement of Senator Hillary Clinton last December. In Iowa, it was only days after the announcement that over a hundred of IUPAT members mobilized to work phone banks, walk door to door to hand out campaign literature and show their black and gold colors to cheer our candidate on at rallies. IUPAT Campaigns in NYC IUPAT Members in Canada in Political Action-Party memberships seen as key to Alberta race So the eight men vying to replace retiring Progressive Conservative Leader and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein have been working less on perfecting their platforms than selling as many $5 party memberships as they can. "I've spent the last year and a half not trying to garner headlines so much as getting volunteers in places such as Brooks and Claresholm and Edson and Hinton," said Mark Norris, a former Klein cabinet minister and Edmonton businessman, who is running for the province's top political job. "That's really the point of this whole exercise. If you don't have the organization, you can't win -- period." Like the 1992 Tory leadership race, the party will use a one-person, one-vote system, so signing up members is vital for a victory. Anyone who is 16 or older, a resident of Alberta for the past six months and has $5 to buy a party membership can vote in their home constituency. Read more...
